Palembang is one of big city in Indonesia. It has the famous AMPERA BRIDGE, which crossing the larges river in Sumatra. It has beautiful lighters at night and there are many romantic restaurant near the river. The most popular food is PEMPEK, everybody that goes to Palembang should try. The famous brand of PEMPEK is Fiko, Beringin and Candy. Unfortunatelly, when I visited Palembang, I found that Palembang people were not realy friendly, they rarely smiling, even people who work at public place like hotel, restaurant or shopping mall. But I did fall in love to a place named 40th AVENUE, it is a restaurant that serve Western and Indonesian food. The building is so beautiful and romantic. They decorated like classical house with a lot of flowers. The staff were so friendly and have a good respond to consumers need.
One of the food heaven and capital in Indonesia, must try all the local foods from the street vendor to historical restaurants.... Gateway to explore the whole West Sumatra Province. Padang also struck by earthquakes several times in recent history, but traveler can also opt to choose some of the earthquake-proof hotels, which also a designated tsunami evacuation place.
Palembang has been my home for two years and I never liked this city. This is not a touristic city as there is very little to see or do here except checking out the Ampera Bridge with the greyish-brown cesspool called the Musi river and eating Pempek (steamed tapioca flour+fish cakes with spicy sweet soy sauce) in one of the ubiquitous pempek joints in town. I personally find most pempek to be foul and suspiciously fishy. One variety of pempek however, the 'Pistel', made with Papaya, is the only one I truly enjoy. Go for the chain called 'Beringin', where the quality is usually consistent. On a positive note, Palembang is home to my favorite type of Martabak called Martabak HAR. The one located near the Great Mosque (Masjid Agung) is the best and one of the oldest locations if not the first. Its referred to as Martabak HAR - Pasar 16 #2. When it comes to the quality of air, be aware that the local fertilizer plant, PUSRI, spews its toxic smoke continuously in Palembang, which gives the air a scent slightly reminiscent of feces. Very unpleasant, but locals can't even smell it anymore. I still do! For these reasons, I wouldn't recommend Palembang to newcomers or anyone else in Indonesia that matter. Don't let this city be your lasting impression of Sumatra. Instead, you should opt for Aceh and Weh Island, or even Pagaralam or Lampung.
Medan is a big city in sumatra island. This city is popular for the culinary lovers because most of the food have a tasty taste.
dingy noisy crowded.... loved the grand mosque and palace, but this is not the main reason people come to Sumatra..... brush up on your Bahasa, very few people speak English...... yeah, unspoiled by tourists..... but it is only a transit point for most people
Not much to see in this big town of North Sumatra. Just a stopover between two flights, but unfortunately no hotels close to the new airport, which is 1 hour from town.
Amazing jungle experience with a 3 year old who was lucky to see orang Utans and elephant in the nature of Sumatra !
In my opinion, Padang (+West Sumatra, incl. Bukittinggi, Pariaman, etc.) is one of the most beautiful area in Sumatra. The rivers, beaches, mountains are very beautiful; the sky is clear & blue; the city itself is very clean (especially when compared to most big cities in Indonesia); the people is very friendly; transportation is ok (very easy to get taxi or online transport in the city); food is really great (after Medan imho).
Your journey to overland Sumatra could start here. Lots of beaches and nice spots for snorkeling. Or, you can try Krakatau tour package, the volcanoes in Sundanese narrows.
There don't seem to come many foreigners to visit. So the historical sites are all in Indonesian only. You can still relax on the beaches or take a tour with Wild Sumatra Tours. I did the tubing, which was really fun
Bukittinggi
Central location - 2 minutes walking to the main Square, cafes and restaurants and landmarks. The hostel is new and clean, the rooms have only one bed, and the shared bathrooms on the corridor. There's a table with free tea and coffee on the corridor. The stuff is very friendly and helpful even though they speak little English. They helped me with a taxi to Padang at an incredible low price (I wouldn't have gotten this with any travel agency). Internet is very fast and good. The best place I stayed in Sumatra so far.

The Sapo Karo Rest House is exceptionally welcoming. We had only one day and wanted to see the volcano, hot springs and get transfer to Medan. We managed to plan everything in advanced through WhatsApp, and ended up seeing beautiful sunrise from the top of volcano. During the drive to Medan we stopped for great Javanese meal, and driver from rest house gave us good advice for better stay in Medan (after encounter with bad hotel in Medan). It was our best short stay during visit of Sumatra. Thanks again :)

The breakfast at smileys is just stunning!!! Best breakfast you will find in Sumatra with self-made bread and banana-cupcakes. The room was big and clean with a nice terrace and a beautiful view. The hostel is located around 15 min walk from the center away, near to a nice viewpoint where you can see the sunset. Smiley ans his wife are such nice people! I would definitely go againg!
This is truly a hidden gem in west Sumatra. The place exceeds all expectations as it is brand new, very modern and carefully cleaned every day. The breakfast offered by the host is very complete and flexible. And apart from all that, the host is an amazing person and will help you out with pretty much anything you might need with your trip to West Sumatra and Indonesia in general.
Medan
We had a lovely time here when we landed in Sumatra, so much that we came back again when we were leaving Sumatra. The place is an oasis outside of the city. The staff are friendly and helpful with lots of advice on onward travels in the area and across Indonesia. The rooms are clean and comfortable, the garden is beautiful and the breakfast is yummy. Would highly recommend.

Best homestay in Sumatra. The family is so lovely. They organised the volcano sunrise tour for us and a tour to ghosttown, both tours were fantastic. The breakfast is very tasty. The rooms are clean, hot water, comfortable beds. Centrally located. The accommodation actually looks much better than the pictures, the rooms are comparable to hotel rooms. Absolutely recommend!!!
We met the wonderful Deni and Robby here. They showed us around Sumatra. We had a great and fun time with them touring around. Two wonderful guys we won't ever forget. Back to the hotel. Rooms are adequate, pizza is nice and the personnel is lovely. Anything can be arranged (transport, tour, etc). There is a good view of Sibayak and Sinabung on clear days.
Perfectly located for trekking the Gunung Leusser National Park. Hotel Orangutan is only a couple of minutes away from the entry gate of the home of the Sumatran Orangutans. Besides its perfect location, Hotel Orangutan has the most wonderful staff one could imagine and hires the best guide (—> Jerry) for an unforgettable trekking experience in the jungle.
This is my first time visiting West Sumatra. One of the cities I visited was the city of Padang. while in Padang I stayed at @amarishotelpadang by @amarishotels The hotel location is very strategic in the city center. Nice hotel, friendly service, affordable prices and delicious breakfast. This hotel is highly recommended for those of you who will visit Padang.
Tuktuk Siadong
The location and setting of the homestay is amazing just on the lake and the wooden restaurant is really nice to chill in. I also had my first hot shower in Sumatra after 7 days which was great as not many homestays have hot water! The food served in the restaurant is also decent too if you're craving some western food again!
Bukit Lawang
Very friendly and accommodating owners and great view of the rice paddies from the windows (that covered all the walls) of my room. Lived the true Sumatran shower experience: sluicing buckets of water down my body felt SO refreshing in the humid warm weather. Also, loved the porch area just outside of the hotel!
The breakfast was like a party! Great local music and wonderful stations, including all kinds of interesting teas and coffees. Lovely traditionally-dressed staff, an enormous array of local Sumatran, Indonesian, and international foods; one of the best breakfast buffets I've ever enjoyed. And, pool-side!
A very comfortable hotel with everything you need. Nice swimming pool, excellent food. Located outside Medan (which is also nice and quiet). There is little to do in the immediate vicinity of the hotel. For us it was a hotel to recover from traveling through Sumatra for 10 days and it was fine to relax there
We stayed 2 x one night with our family of four during our holiday through Sumatra and had a very good stay. Large clean appartement, friendly staff, good Indonesian breakfast, second time when we had to leave early they offered a take away breakfast. Also handy is the CIMB bank opposite of the hotel.
Great hotel, lovely helpful staff and very clean. Large room and comfortable bed. Nice to hang around the pool. Massive buffet breakfast (extra cost). Good place to stay for a couple of nights or on arrival/departure to Sumatra. Good value for money.
Tuktuk Siadong
Wonderful lake view, clean and nicely built rooms (which were huge!). This hotel’s kitchen is a hidden gem, we ate the best meals of our two weeks’ holiday on Sumatra here! All staff is super friendly and will help you arrange everything you need
this hotel is located near universitas sumatra utara and few others university , if you just want to stay here these universities for convenient sake .. is ok .. otherwise , nothing special about it
Great hotel just in the heart of the city. Beautiful courtyard with pool. There is a bar there, where you can enjoy evening with J&T or other cocktails, which is rare occasion in Sumatra 🙂
Overall fine hotel, location is good near the train station and some of the very few sights that Medan has to offer. Ideal for a stop-over to travel to other parts of Northern Sumatra.
the hostel is clean, modern furnished and the location is good. Sukma who is helping the owner to check-in guests and provides information about Sumatra is very lovely and helpful.
